Lunderston Bay Beach

Lunderston Bay, Glasgow’s nearest sandy beach, is a beloved spot for families, walkers, and picnickers. When the sun graces the sky, it’s no surprise that the bay buzzes with activity. Fortunately, there’s ample space here to unwind and enjoy.

The beach boasts a spacious, free car park, adjacent to a wide, grassy area adorned with picnic tables and room for games. As you descend from the grassy expanse, you’ll encounter a delightful mix of sand, pebbles, and rocks along the shoreline. Children can revel in building sandcastles, splashing in the waves, and exploring captivating rockpools teeming with sealife. The knowledgeable ranger service offers a variety of educational and family-friendly activities.

Lunderston Bay lies within the Clyde and Muirshiel Regional Park, offering a choice of scenic walks. From the beach, a small footpath leads either south to Inverkip or north to the Cloch Point lighthouse and beyond to Gourock. The views across the Firth of Clyde, stretching toward Dunoon and the Isle of Bute, provide a serene backdrop for watching passing boats.

Wildlife enthusiasts will delight in the diverse fauna found here, including various bird species, occasional seals, and jellyfish. While most jellyfish in the area are harmless, a few pack a nasty sting—so if you encounter one, it’s best to look but not touch.

Facilities at the beach are excellent, featuring toilets with hot and cold water (open from 10 am to 4 pm), abundant bins, and accessible amenities for disabled visitors. Just across the road from the beach, you’ll find a large garden center complete with a cozy coffee shop.
